Abstract

The definition of justice (δικαιοσύνη) in Special Laws 4, 135-238 of Philo can be deduced from the value of context in the translation of terms that share the same semantic field, and from the connotation that the concept receives in its approach, influence and difference with Greek, Hellenistic Jewish, and Greco-roman philosophy. The objective of our work will be to define justice in Special Laws 4, 135-238 by means of an examination of the concept in relation to notions whose translation helps to establish the ideological scope of justice in Philo. We will attempt to demonstrate that in Philo’s thought, the concept of justice is defined from the lexical categories that configure a world view determined by the ideological context of the Jewish community of Alexandria in the first century A.D.
