Abstract

In his Moralia, Plutarch devotes the piece Coniugalia praecepta to giving advice about good behaviour in marriage. The work recommends (clearly influenced by Stoicism) moderation and self-control as grounds for a good marriage. Consequently, the scholars believed that Plutarch proposed private and domestic rules of behavior, restricted to the enclosed space of the oîkos. Using textual analysis, we will aim to object to that point of view. Not denying the presence of Stoic elements, we believe Plutarch’s idea of the duties of the spouses to be wider, inasmuch as he gives special importance to private and public acts as models for society.
